Delaware Department of Transportation
Savannah Road Transportation Alternative Project
Rossi Group developed transportation improvement concepts to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety and to enhance aesthetics along Savannah Road, a busy commercial and recreational area near the beachfront of Lewes, Delaware.
The project limits extended from the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal bridge east to the Lewes beach parking lot including American Legion Road. The popularity of adjacent trails coupled with the increasing number of pedestrians and
bicyclists using the street network drove the City’s consideration of walking and bicycling as a significant mode of non-vehicular transportation.
The improvement concepts provided additional and enhanced ADA compliant sidewalks, crosswalks, and intersections; new bicycle lanes and parking; and a tidal wetland overlook. The project was funded through a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant.
We worked with the City of Lewes and DelDOT throughout design development to ensure all TAP grant eligibility guidelines were followed, requirements were met, and improvements are consistent with the Lewes Comprehensive Plan and the Historic Byway Plan.
